Android-based tablets may have dented Apple’s tablet market share during Q3 2012, knocking it down from 65.5% in Q2 to 50.4%, but the Cupertino-based tech giant looks to be bouncing back quickly thanks to the new iPad Mini and fourth generation iPad.

Apple announced that it has sold three million iPads in just three days since the launch of its new iPad Mini and fourth generation iPad. This equates to double the previous first weekend milestone of 1.5 million Wi-Fi-only models sold for the third generation iPad (review) during March.

The new iPad Mini boasts similar specs to that of the iPad 2 (review), as it features a 7.9" multi-touch-enabled display with the same non-Retina (768 x 1024; 163 ppi) resolution of the iPad 2 and is powered by an 1 GHz dual-core A5 system-on-a-chip (SoC). This mini-me iPad has access to an extensive apps library right out of the box, since it will run all the apps supported by Apple’s iPad 2.

In contrast, the new fourth generation iPad packs the same 9.7" (2048 x 1536; 264 ppi) Retina display found on the third generation iPad. It is powered by the company’s new A6X chip, which apparently boasts twice the graphics and processing power as the third generation iPad. Also onboard is a new, smaller Lightning connector, dual-band 802.11 n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and a HD-Ready (720p) FaceTime camera.

“Customers around the world love the new iPad Mini and 4th generation iPad,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We set a new launch weekend record and practically sold out of iPad Minis. We’re working hard to build more quickly to meet the incredible demand.”

In other tablet related news, Google recently launched an upgrade to its well received Nexus 7 tablet (review), along with a new 10" Nexus device, hoping to bring an end to Apple’s iPad dominance.
