Social networking site Twitter has released its Year In Review report, shedding light on the most popular topics of discussion and hashtags of this year. These have been divided into categories ranging from tech and music through to actors and television.

The micro-blogging site stated that these topics, whether they emanate from the news world, such as Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak’s resignation in Egypt, or entertainment buzz subjects the likes of Charlie Sheen’s dramatic fall from TV grace, “reflect the diverse things that matter to us in our daily lives.”

In the world of tech, Apple’s Mac App Store ruled the Twitter topic roost, with Sony’s NGP (next generation portable, now called the PlayStation Vita) coming in second. Guitar Hero drove the social networking crowd mad with its supposed death to claim third spot.

The top tweeted news events on Twitter for 2011 was Egyptian president Mubarak’s resignation, followed by the US raid on Osama Bin Laden, with the Japanese earthquake and Fukushima nuclear disaster rounding off the top three.

Hot topics from the silver screen

When it came to movies Thor managed to hammer its way to the top of the list, whilst the next installment of the Batman saga, The Dark Knight Rises, claimed second spot, with X-Men: First Class third on the podium.

The self named “unemployed winner” Charlie Sheen tops the actor list, with Home Alone star Macaulay Culkin holding down second place and Jackass star Ryan Dunn’s unfortunate death ensuring his third spot.

The death of actress Elizabeth Taylor propelled her to the top of the actress listing, beating Black Swan and That ‘70s Show star Mila Kunis and The Devil Wears Prada and Alice in Wonderland actress Anne Hathaway to the top spot.

Egypt also came up tops in terms of hashtags (#), used to mark keywords or topics within a tweet, with Charlie Sheen’s hashtag of choice #tigerblood taking silver and the concise summary of Twitter users life creeds, #threewordstoliveby, grabbing bronze.
