Symantec has announced that its security suite, Norton 360 version 6.0, has just earned top rankings for both protection and performance, during recently performed third party tests.

Norton 360 version 6.0 ranked first in overall real-world protection, as well as remediation in tests done by the AV-TEST Institute in January. These tests involved a comparative review of 12 home user security products including Symantec Norton 360 v6 Pre Release, Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2012, AVG Premium Security 2012 and Avast Software’s Internet Security 6.0.

The goal of the tests was to determine these packages’ real-world protection and remediation capabilities. In addition to the core product, dedicated removal tools as well as bootable rescue media (offered by some of the vendors), were added to these tests.

Symantec’s Norton 360 version 6.0 also received top performance scores during tests performed by PassMark Software. PassMark Software conducted objective performance testing on thirteen internet security software products, seventeen antivirus software products, as well as five total security software products on Windows 7 Ultimate Edition (64-bit) SP1, between April 2011 and January 2012.

In the total security software segment for which the highest possible score is 85, Norton 360 v6.0 scored 69, beating out Trend Micro Titanium Maximum Security 2012 (scored 55) and McAfee Total Protection 2012 (scored 49) for the top position.

However, in the antivirus software category for which the highest possible score attainable is 289, Norton Antivirus 2012 placed second with its score of 203, with Webroot SecureAnywhere AntiVirus 2012 taking top honours (scored 257) and Avast! Pro Antivirus 6 (scored 183) completing the top three.  

Norton 360 version 6.0 highlights:
  • Norton Identity Safe – Secures, remembers, and automatically enters user names and passwords while protecting users from online threats.
  • Norton Management – Delivers advanced cloud-based functionality to manage select Norton products remotely for greater ease and control.
  • Bandwidth Management – Limits non-critical Norton updates when connected to metered networks to avoid using up monthly data allotments or causing overage fees.
  • Improved Backup – Faster and easier back up capabilities and tracking.
Pricing and availability

Norton 360 version 6.0 can be installed on up to three PCs and is available for purchase from various retailers as well as the Norton online store. The suggested retail price is R899 for the standard edition which includes 2 GB of online storage space, a three PC license for one year, Symantec’s protection updates as well as one full year of Norton’s customer support.
