Apple’s money-making streak continues during its financial fourth quarter, with the iPhone still delivering a star performance within the firm’s sales show.

The Cupertino-based tech outfit announced its financial results for its fiscal Q4 2012, revealing a record quarterly revenue of $36 billion and quarterly net profit of $8.2 billion. These results compare very favourably to revenue of $28.3 billion and net profit of $6.6 billion for the same period last year. International sales accounted for 60% of the quarter’s revenue.

Thanks to the release of the new iPhone 5 within some markets, the company sold 26.9 million iPhones during the quarter, representing a 58% unit growth over the year-ago quarter.

Apple managed to sell 14 million iPads, which is a 26% unit increase from the same period in 2011, but is three million less than Q3 2012’s record amount of 17 million iPads. However, the firm looks set to significantly boost its iPad sales figure during the next quarter, courtesy of the newly unveiled iPad Mini and fourth generation iPad.

Less stellar sales performances were put in by the company’s Mac computers and iPods. Apple sold just shy of five million Macs during Q4 2012 the quarter, representing a barely registering 1% unit increase over the year-ago quarter. The addition of the newly unveiled 13" MacBook Pro with Retina display as well as a revamped iMac should deliver a more notable sales rise for the company during the next fiscal period. Cupertino only sold 5.3 million iPods, which is a 19% unit decline from Q4 2011, but the company’s introduction of newly improved iPod touch and nano models should counter this bad sales run during Apple’s fiscal Q1 2013.

“We’re very proud to end a fantastic fiscal year with record September quarter results,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “We’re entering this holiday season with the best iPhone, iPad, Mac and iPod products ever, and we remain very confident in our new product pipeline.”

In related news, Apple also recently unveiled a welcome update to its free e-reading iBooks app with iBooks 3.0 also becoming available in the South African App Store.
