Canon SA is calling on South Africans to turn their selfies away from themselves and instead, shifting the focus to animals as part of a social movement which will see people across the world posting an image of a selfless act called #selfieless.

The worldwide movement will kick-start in South Africa on 21 November 2016 with a donation of R60 000 from Canon SA to the Animal Anti Cruelty League. The organisation has a long heritage of giving back through selfless acts of care and kindness to animals. Since 1956, the Animal Anti Cruelty league has been protecting and caring for animals in South Africa and is now the second biggest independent animal welfare organisation in the country. The organisation relies entirely upon the generosity and goodwill of the animal-loving public for financial and other support.

“Canon SA has enthusiastically embraced Canon’s worldwide #selfieless movement. Locally we’ve been supporting the Animal Anti Cruelty League since 2004 and have chosen the organisation as the recipient of our #selfieless campaign. They work tirelessly to rescue and care for neglected and abused animals and without the support from the community and caring corporates, the organisation would not survive.

“Canon SA’s selfless act was to donate R60 000 to the organisation which celebrates its 60th year of selfless acts in this country. We urge individuals and companies to join our  #selfieless movement and help improve the quality of life for an animal this festive season,” says Dana Eitzen, Corporate & Marketing Communications Executive at Canon SA.

In a world where people snap an average of 93 million selfies a day*, the #selfieless movement is all about encouraging the spirit of selflessness over the festive season, a time when everyone should make an effort to do something for the good of others.

To get involved, choose an act of kindness towards our furry friends, take a photo, post it on social media using #selfieless and nominate friends to do the same.

Acts of kindness could include:

  • Walking your neighbours’ dog (if you know your neighbour is unable to);
  • Visiting an Animal Anti Cruelty League (AACL) shelter and spreading some love amongst the animals;
  • Volunteering at the shelter or even foster or adopt (don’t shop) a family pet;
  • Organising a fundraiser to get your community excited about helping animals in despair through a fun run, party, car wash, bake sale etc;
  • Supporting the Animal Anti Cruelty Leaugue by donating food or blankets at any of the AACL and Canon collection points.
