Hasbro, one of the world's leading toy makers, is setting its sites on combining two of today's hottest new technological trends, the iPhone and 3D technology.

According to the Associated Press, the company today unveiled to investors a handheld device called the My3D. The device can attach to either the Apple iPhone or iPod and promises to bring 3D content that offers a 360-degree viewing experience to users that is perfect for gaming, virtual travel experiences and entertainment content.

The device resembles a pair of binoculars which users put over their eyes to be able to view the 3D content, it includes a slot into which an iPod or iPhone can be inserted. It will be going on sale this spring in the United States for $30 (around R204), and will be available from any stores stocking the Apple iPhone or iPod.

Once the device has been purchased, users can visit Apple's App Store where they will be available to find additional My3D content varying in price, with some apps available for free.

The main question is whether enough 3D content will be available to satisfy consumers demands, but Hasbro isn't concerned, saying it has partnered with Dreamworks Animation to develop new material.

Hasbro's My3D will also use content from a 3D television network from Discovery, Sony and Imax, which is scheduled to launch sometime next year. Users will be able to watch movie trailers and see exclusive sneak peaks from films and shows for up to 20 minutes.

Virtual travel experiences will also be concentrated on as Hasbro worked with LA Inc. as well as the Los Angeles Convention and Visitors Bureau to create virtual travel experiences which includes the Wax Museum and Santa Monica Pier.

Through other apps users can enjoy new experiences such as feeling as if they're immersed in water, exploring coral reefs, playing shooter games in a virtual galaxy and even playing a shark attacking a tuna.

"The idea of being able to be somewhere in Los Angeles, in this 360-degree environment, to be in the shark tank, to be able to swim with the fish and chase after the fish. These are really breakthrough immersive experiences," said Brian Goldner, president and CEO of Hasbro.

The device definitely sounds promising, and it will be very interesting to see if it will be able to live up to the company’s expectations. No release or pricing information is available for South Africa yet, but if it’s a popular enough device we should see it a couple of months down the line.
