The dates for Canon SA’s forthcoming Canon SA Expo have been announced, as have the themes and prizes for this year’s accompanying competition.

The expo will be held from Friday 30 November to Sunday 2 December 2012 at the Sandton Convention Centre  and will be open from 10am to 6pm daily. As before, entrance will be free, and Canon’s wide range of consumer and selected business solutions will be showcased.

However, Canon announced that this year the expo will include more guest speaker sessions than last year, with two sessions running simultaneously throughout the day on all three days.

On your marks, get set, go!

Leading up to the expo, aspiring photographers will once again be able to participate in the Canon Photo Competition.

Participants can enter into one or all four themed categories, which Canon explained are “designed to encourage creative interpretation”.
 
“Besides the unexpectedly high attendance at last year’s expo, we were also truly amazed at the quality of entries submitted for the photographic competition. We will use a similar format to last year but intend on making the themes even more interesting,” commented Michelle Janse van Vuuren, marketing manager at Canon SA.

To this end, the themes for this year’s competition are Reflections; Into the Great Wide Open; Adrenaline and Magic Colours. One winner per category will be selected by a panel of judges and will be announced on 15 January 2013. Each of the four winners will walk away with an EOS 5D Mark III including an EF40mm F2.8 STM lens.

Selected entries will be exhibited online on Canon SA’s Expo website (www.csaexpo.co.za) as well as on the expo’s Facebook site when it becomes available. Additionally, the top ten entries in each category will also be exhibited in the gallery at the Canon Expo, where visitors will be able to vote for their favourite entries.

Entries must be submitted in electronic JPEG format, not exceeding 2 MB, via email. There are four email addresses correlating to the various themes. Entrants must submit their entries to the email address appropriate to the category they are entering namely; reflections@csaexpo.co.za; wideopen@csaexpo.co.za; adrenaline@csaexpo.co.za and colours@csaexpo.co.za
 
Entries open at 12.01am on the 15^th of August (in other words, this morning) and close at 11.59 pm  on the 15^th of October 2012. Voting for the entries opens on 1 November at 12.01 am and close at 11.59 pm on 2nd December. The winners will be announced on the Canon Expo website on the 15^th of January 2013.

As with last year, visitors will be able to purchase selected Canon’s products, and the company has indicated that various specials will be available on a select range of Canon consumer imaging products while the expo is running.

To the point

Judging by the talent that we saw last year, it was very apparent that South Africa boasts some extremely talented photographers, and that the more photographic expos and competitions we have, the better. Indeed, having spent a little bit of hands on time with the prize on offer earlier this year, we suspect that shooting one’s heart out would be well worth the effort.
