Canon South Africa recently released a new line of compact super zoom cameras localy. The new Powershot SX30 IS is the successor to the SX20 IS and sports a range of improvements over its predecessor.

The high performance camera sports a 23 mm ultra-wide, 35x optical zoom lens for impressive photo quality. A 2.7" LCD display puts users in direct control and a 14.1 megapixel sensor allows photographers to generate A2+ size prints.

The massive 35x optical zoom lens extends from 24 mm to 840 mm (35 mm equivalent), capable of capturing both extreme wide-angle and telephoto shots. Employing Ultrasonic (USM) and Voice Coil (VCM) motors enables fast, accurate and silent zooming and focusing which work for both stills and movies.

Canon has also seen it fit to equip this model with the most effective optical Image Stabiliser (IS) ever to be used in one of its compact cameras. The IS offers up to 4.5 stops of compensation and the lens-shift system can effectively minimise blur when using a long zoom and when the use of fast shutter speed is not possible.

As most compact cameras of today, the SX30 IS also offers movie capturing capabilities. The camera is capable of 720p HD movie capture alongside stereo sound and full optical zoom, allowing budding photographers to test out their directing skills on the fly.

During movie recording focus and exposure settings can be locked or adjusted while a special Dynamic IS mode reduces the camera shake to produce a much steadier picture. The Smart Auto feature, available to help beginners, is also present in movie mode, helping to detect up to 21 different scene types and automatically evaluating and adjusting settings to achieve optimum exposure, give priority to faces and boost colours. Movies can be viewed by connecting the camera to your HDTV through the included HDMI-mini port.

The Canon SX30 IS has a recommended retail price of R4299 and will go on sale at all major retailers by the end of October. Additional information is available from canon.co.za.
