Continuing its recent spree of acquisitions, Facebook today announced that it has purchased Israeli mobile app maker Snaptu in a deal with an estimated value of $60 to $70 million.

Snaptu is a mobile app developer which has recently been working with Facebook as well as other partners to launch even more streamlined versions of their mobile sites.

Snaptu's mobile site is designed to accommodate a larger variety of devices, ensuring a smooth mobile browsing experience, even if you don't have a smartphone.

According to the company, its Facebook app covers 80% of all mobile devices sold around the world and is compatible with up to 2 500 different devices.

"The acquisition is expected to close within a few weeks. We'll have more updates on Snaptu soon, and we'll be working hard to offer a richer and more advanced Facebook app on virtually every mobile phone. During this transition period, we expect Snaptu will continue to operate as it does today," the company stated in a press release.

However it will remain to be seen how Snaptu is going to operate in the coming months, whether the company will move to developing exclusively for Facebook, or whether it will be allowed to develop for other clients as well.
