Speculation is rife that Facebook is launching an email service today that will provide users with a @facebook.com email address. If news sources are to be believed this service, officially known as Project Titan, will be the “Gmail killer”, also affecting usage of Yahoo mail, Hotmail and more locally Webmail.

While Facebook users are able to email other Facebook users, they cannot send mail to anyone outside of Facebook. Project Titan is set to end this issue, while also addressing the fact that currently Facebook email cannot handle attachments. 
 
According to social media blog Mashable, a special press event is going to be held today in San Fransico at 10 am (8 pm local time) where the unveiling of the new service is expected take place. The inclusion of the Facebook inbox logo on the invitation is the reason given for the speculation. 
 
Facebook currently have more than 500 million active users, with users spending more than 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook.
