Starting Wednesday, 1 December, a multitude of celebrities will quit their social networking accounts in support of Alicia Keys’ charity, Keep a Child Alive.

According to the BBC stars such as Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake and Usher, have vowed not to tweet, blog or update anymore until one million dollars for Keys’ charity has been raised. Keep a Child Alive supports families who have been affected by HIV/Aids in Africa and India.

The campaign, called Digital life Sacrifice, has filmed the celebrities' last digital updates which will be aired in the form of adverts on World Aids Day, 1 December. The stars will be lying in coffins to represent their ‘digital deaths’, according to the BBC.

"This is such a direct and instantly emotional way and a little sarcastic, you know, of a way to get people to pay attention,” Alicia Keys told the BBC.

With the support of big celebrities such as Lady Gaga, with more than 30 million fans collectively on Facebook and Twitter, Kim and Kloe Kardashian, Ryan Seacrest, Elijah Wood and Serena Williams, it should not be long before the one million dollar quota is met.

Co-founder of Keep a Child Alive, Leigh Blake, told the BBC that Lady Gaga has such a huge mobile fan base that she could ‘raise the money by herself’. Lady Gaga became the first star to break more than 10 million fans on Facebook back in July this year.
