Lenovo has announced its new ThinkCentre M92p, a tiny PC that may be more reminiscent of teeing off than booting up, as it has the distinction of being as thin as a golf ball, measuring a mere 34.5 mm in width.

Despite its slender profile and while being designed to fit into any space, according to the company, the ThinkCentre M92p can still accommodate 3rd Generation Intel Core vPro processors, up to an i5.

The computer further supports up to four monitors in Mosaic Mode or three independent monitors without the need for a graphics card. Lenovo revealed that it is also expanding its accessories portfolio to include options specifically created for the tiny form factor.

Boot up or tee off?

Additionally, the new desktop can accommodate solid state or traditional hard drives, alongside its integrated graphics, USB 3.0 and Wi-Fi. The company further asserted that with Lenovo’s Enhanced Experience 3 for Windows 7, the tiny form factor enjoys a fast boot up that is 30% quicker than non-optimised PCs.

“ThinkCentre desktops are evolving to fit the needs of today’s professional users, offering superior desktop power in a very innovative, space and energy efficient form factor,” commented Lv Yan, senior vice president, Think Product Group, Lenovo.

He elaborated that the company had designed the tiny form factor “so that businesses can enjoy outstanding performance and manageability regardless of the size of their workspace.”

The ThinkCentre M92p is a slender, portable PC that Lenovo envisions fitting in any space.

Welcome to the range...

Additionally, the company also announced its Next Generation All-in-One (AIO), the ThinkCentre M92z, which is available in 20” and 23” models, and boasts up to 3rd Generation Intel Core vPro i7 processors, 1 TB of storage with optional solid state or traditional hard drives and an optional 1 GB discrete AMD Radeon graphics on the 23” model.

Additionally, the AIO has the distinction of being designed to be environmentally friendly. The company explained that  its plastic components use more than 50% recycled consumer materials.

It further meets multiple certification requirements for energy efficiency and environmental considerations, including EPEAT Gold, UL Environment Gold, Energy Star, TCO Edge, GREENGUARD, Cisco EnergyWise and TUV Green Mark.

Yet another player

The third new released announced by the Chinese computer giant is the voice and audio optimized 23” ThinkVision LT2323z. This has been designed with VoIP in mind, as the IPS screen enables multiple viewers to see images clearly regardless of their viewing angle.

It further boasts an integrated Full HD camera, speakers, and dual digital microphone with noise cancellation and adjustable settings. Additionally, users can engage a dual-screen mode, which provides the benefit of two monitors in one, while the monitor can also be lifted, tilted, swivelled or pivoted.

The ThinkCentre M72e/M92/M92p Tiny desktop, ThinkCentre M92z all-in-one desktop and ThinkVision LT2323z monitor will be available locally from July; prices for all three are yet to be released.

To the point

As PC manufacturers explore more innovative form factors for desktops, and as Lenovo compares its latest ThinkCentre M92p to a golf ball, the question remains whether this is enough to turn general users back to being ‘fore’ desktop PCs and away from being against them.

Our suggestion: comparing a PC to a golfball is well and good, so long as your users don’t try booting it up by smacking it with a nine iron.
