Cellular service provider MTN says that recent problems with dropped calls boil down to problems with either a) Telkom, or b) Eskom.

At yesterday’s MTN Media Forum event held at their offices in Fairway, MTN MD Tim Lowry said that MTN’s percentage of dropped calls accounts for only 1% of all calls made on the network. This is below the international average of 2%. Of this 1% of calls dropped MTN blames Telkom for 53.1% of the problems; while Eskom’s insufficient power supply is held responsible for 37.8% of difficulties. MTN only takes responsibility for 7.25% of dropped calls on the network.

Lowry also called for all major licensed providers to publish information on their non-financial key performance parameters on a regular basis. These would include key network parameters, subscription base as well as network performance.
