The official local body representing new vehicle manufacturers, Naamsa (National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa), has released its latest vehicle sales figures, revealing the best selling vehicles in South Africa during April 2013. These figures reveal how the local car market rallied to growth during April, following the first sales slide in three years during March 2013.

New vehicle sales ended on 50 920 units, which is an increase of 19.5% compared to April 2012’s tally of 42 608. New passenger car sales (34 346) increased by 16.4% whilst new light commercial vehicle (LCV; 14 045) sales grew by 27.6% year-on-year.

Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa (FMCSA) achieved its highest share (10.1%) since December 2005, with sales volumes up by 44.5% year-on-year. This, within an industry where overall sales only increased by 19.5%.
 
FMCSA GM of sales, Rob Crouse, commented: “Our dealer channel continues to be the primary driving force behind increasing sales, indicating strengthening consumer demand. Where fleet and government sales are softening, dealer channel sales are up 9.9% year-to-date.”

In other car related news, Mercedes-Benz recently launched the second generation of its biggest premium SUV - the GL-class - in South Africa.
