Nokia has introduced its own BBM-type instant messaging program called IM for Nokia, which allows users to connect to their friends, colleagues and family members over Wi-Fi or 3G via Nokia’s own instant messaging client.

IM for Nokia is an instant messenger program that allows users to send messages to anybody else who has the same app installed, as well as other IM clients including Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger as well as MySpace IM.

Nokia users can download (1-5.16 MB, depending on the device) IM for Nokia from the Ovi Store and log in using their Ovi account username and password. This is the same username and password that they use when downloading from Ovi Store.

The Finnish phone maker stated that although IM for Nokia is currently only available from Ovi Store, it will come pre-installed on new devices over the coming months. This app is available for the Nokia X6, Nokia 5230, Nokia N8, Nokia E7 and for devices powered by Symbian Series 40 as well.

In related news, Apple recently provided a preview of the forthcoming version of its mobile OS, which included its new  iMessage messaging service. This service allows users to send text messages, photos and videos between all iOS 5-operating mobile devices over Wi-Fi or 3G.
