PlayStation players be warned: the PlayStation Network (PSN) will go down for scheduled maintenance tomorrow, derailing plans you may have of multiplayer gaming. Additionally, users will not be able to access the PlayStation Store or make and download new purchases.

On the PlayStation blog, Patrick Seybold, the senior  director for Corporate Communications and Social Media, elaborated that the PSN will undergo a significant maintenance period on the 1st of March, which is expected to start at just after 8 am Pacific Time (5 pm South African time).

The downtime is slated to last for several hours, until approximately 10 pm Pacific (7 am Friday morning South African time). The routine maintenance apparently is intended to fix bugs and optimise the console’s performance.

“Unlike typical maintenance events, consumers who are already signed-in to PSN will be signed-out, and consumers will be unable to sign in for the duration of the maintenance window. During this time, users won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Home, Account Management or play online,” he said.

According to the International Business Times, the system was last subjected to a shutdown for routine maintenance in December last year. It will, however, be the first since Sony launched the PlayStation Vita.

Seybold apologised for any inconvenience the shutdown may cause, and encouraged users to “stay tuned to the PlayStation Twitter feed for a notice when PSN is fully back online.”
