Samsung seems to be busier than ever, announcing a plethora of new mobile devices of late,
beginning with the Galaxy S II LTE and the Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE and three new bada-operating smartphones.

The Korean tech giant is also announcing a new naming strategy for its Galaxy range of smartphones and unveiled three new Galaxy smartphones, all of which operate on Google’s Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) operating systems.

The new naming structure will organise and group all devices into five classes, identified by a single alphabetical letter. Mobile devices will then be further designated by an additional indicator, which will identify specific functionality.

New ways to identify your Galaxy smartphones

Based on the new naming structure, new class designators refer to the specific category that the smartphone product fits into, for example if the smartphone is a premium device or an entry-level offering.

·         “S” (Super Smart) – Devices at the very top of Samsung’s mobile portfolio. This class will only be used on flagship devices the likes of the Galaxy S II.

·         “R” (Royal / Refined) – Premium category models, a combination of performance and productivity for the individual user, who wants to be defined by the technology they carry.

·         “M” (Magical) – High-performance models at an economic price-point.

·         “Y” (Young) – These are entry models or strategic models for emerging markets or a younger audience more sensitive to price.

Class indicators allow for a more specific description of the key selling points of a device:

·         “Pro” – This indicates that the device includes a QWERTY keyboard to enhance the typing experience and increased productivity for professionals.

·         “Plus” – This indicates that the device is an upgrade from an existing model.

·         “LTE” – This indicates that the smartphone or tablet is designed to utilise LTE (Long-Term Evolution) connectivity standards, a 4G standard to provide increased mobile network capacity and speed.

The company announced three new smartphones falling within its Android-powered Galaxy range, which utilised this new naming convention.  

Galaxy M Pro

Samsung’s Galaxy M Pro sports a QWERTY keyboard, an optical track pad and a 2.66" (480 x 320 pixels) touchscreen, packed into a sleek 9.97 mm body. It also boasts Wi-Fi 802.11n, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth 3.0 with A2DP , a 5 MP auto-focus snapper with LED flash and is powered by a 1 GHz processor (make not specified).

Designed with professionals in mind, the Galaxy M Pro offers extensive productivity through a variety of enterprise solutions, including Exchange Active Sync, Sybase Afaria, CISCO Mobile and CISCO WebEx.

Galaxy Y

According to Samsung the Galaxy Y will deliver seamless multi-tasking thanks to its 832 MHz processor. It also includes 3" (240 x 320 pixels) TFT capacitive touch-screen, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi 802.11n and a microSD card slot with support for cards up to 32 GB in size. Samsung’s Social Hub will enable users to stay connected with their online social circles and as the phone is equipped with Samsung’s latest TouchWiz user interface, the Galaxy Y delivers a simple and intuitive experience. Additionally, the inclusion of SWYPE facilitates quicker typing.

Galaxy Y Pro

Equipped with a QWERTY keyboard as well as enhanced social and professional features, the Galaxy Y Pro smartphone enables users to stay constantly connected with Social Hub Premium. The latter supports email, social network integration as well as instant messaging.

Users are also able to work on the go due to the inclusion of ThinkFree mobile office, enabling a variety of Office documents (Word, PowerPoint and Excel) to be edited using the handset. Wi-Fi Direct also allows faster transfer rates, enabling content to be shared quickly.

No specific local release dates is available yet for any of these newly announced smartphones, but Samsung has said that the Galaxy M Pro as well as the Galaxy Y will be coming to South Africa.

We have introduced steps to ensure users can simply identify the device designed to deliver the perfect experience for them,” said Paulo Ferreira, product management and business solutions at Samsung South Africa.

“In addition to this new naming strategy at IFA this year we are unveiling the GALAXY M Pro, GALAXY Y and GALAXY Y Pro – designed with the professional and social consumer in mind. These products further build on the phenomenal success we have enjoyed with the GALAXY range.”
