If you're a fan of VoIP messaging service Skype and you also happen to own an Android smartphone, good news, because Skype for Android 2.0 has gone live.

According to Gadget, the new version brings video calling capabilities to the Android version for the first time. However Skype will initially only enable video calling on certain Android devices namely; the HTC Desire S, Sony Ericcson Xperia Neo, Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro and the Google Nexus S.

The reason behind the limited rollout is still unclear, but is probably due to continued testing on other devices. The Android app works over Wi-Fi and 3G connections and is available from the Android Market or your phone's browser.

The new feature is a great addition to Skype's Android offering, finally allowing Android users to make (and receive) free video calls over their phone. Calls can be made between Android users, or any of your other Skype contacts be they on the iPhone, Mac, Windows PC or even TV.

“We are committed to bring Skype Video Calling to as many platforms as possible and are delighted to deliver on this with our new updated Android video chat app,” said Neil Stevens, Skype vice president.

The new Skype version for Android also includes a redesigned layout and a “mood message box” has been added to make Facebook-like status updates.

Skype was recently acquired by Microsoft in a much publicised deal, with the Redmond giants purchasing the VoIP company for some $8.5 billion.
