Sony makes its Move to take on the Nintendo Wii

Publish date: 11 March 2010 by Hanleigh Daniels

Sony has revealed its new motion-based controller, dubbed the PlayStation Move, at the Game Developers Conference currently underway in San Francisco. The wand-like device uses motion sensors and the PlayStation Eye camera to track your body movements and will be launched worldwide in late 2010. Sony have stated that the controller and PlayStation Eye camera will come bundled with a game for less than $100 (about R740), but details on pricing and availibility for South Africa haven't been released yet.

According to Sony the PlayStation Move controller “delivers unmatched accuracy through its advanced motion sensors, including a three axis gyroscope, a three axis accelerometer and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor, as well as a colour-changing sphere that is tracked by the PlayStation Eye camera.” The new controller sees Sony following the motion-based path set by Nintendo in a more direct way than Microsoft, who's Project Natal works by tracking your body movements and drops the need for a controller altogether.

Just as is the case with the Wii Remote’s Nunchuk accessory, the PlayStation Move will come with an optional sub-controller that further expands on the gameplay options available to you. This sub-controller contains an analogue stick and directional buttons to enable you to easily control a direction that a character moves in. The PlayStation Move will also come with a built-in lithium-ion rechargeable battery, and Bluetooth which will enable the device to send and receive info to the PS3 wirelessly, just like all other wireless PS3 controllers do.

Sony Computer Entertainment’s Worldwide Studios are already planning to release over 20 titles up until April 2011, either designed specifically for the PlayStation Move controller or offering support for the new gadget. The Game Developers Conference started on Tuesday and will conclude this Saturday.
