Is Nokia working on a MeeGo running iPad rival?
 
Nokia may be preparing to take on Apple’s magical iPad at the end of this year with their own tablet PC. According DigiTimes Systems, the Finnish phone maker will launch an ARM-based tablet PC around Q4 of 2010. The display size will be either 7" or 9" and will probably run on the MeeGo OS. According to DigiTimes Nokia has completed about 100 engineering samples that are ready for testing.
 
Facebook taunts lead to murder
 
According to the BBC, a British boy, then aged 15, stabbed his best friend Salum Kombo (18) in the chest in Bromley-by-Bow in east London during December. He did so after Kombo called him various names on the popular social networking site. The boy was found guilty of murder in May and has been ordered to serve a minimum of 14 years.
 
Intel and Nvidia’s media beef
 
According to Techspot, Intel is attempting to dispel claims made by Nvidia in a paper entitled Debunking the 100x GPU vs CPU Myth which states that application kernels run up to 14 times faster in some circumstances on a Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 than on an Intel Core i7-960.
 
“To understand where such large performance difference comes from, we perform a rigorous performance analysis and find that after applying optimizations appropriate for both CPUs and GPUs the performance gap between an Nvidia GTX280 processor and the Intel Core i7-960 processor narrows to only 2.5x on average,” it states in the abstract of the paper.
 
Latest Firefox browser
 
Mozilla released the latest version of its Firefox browser (3.6.4) on Tuesday and besides the usual bug and security flaw fixes, it includes a new function preventing the browser from crashing. In the event that a plugin such as Adobe Flash or Microsoft Silverlight crashes or freezes, the rest of Firefox won’t be affected and users will simply be able to reload the page to restart the plugin and try again.    
 
US President may get the power to kick you off the net
 
According to Kotaku a new U.S. Senate bill known as the “Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset” Act, will provide the leader of the American government with access to a “kill-switch” which would in effect permit him to kill certain sections of the internet during a cyber security emergency. The affected sections of the net will be determined by the US Department of Homeland Security.
 
Kenya registers its mobile users
 
Its not only South Africans that have to contend with RICA when purchasing a new mobile or buying a new SIM card. The Kenyan government is now proceeding with the registration of all mobile phone numbers in a bid to cut crime.
 
According to the BBC, the Kenyan government has stated that it will be disconnecting unregistered mobile phone numbers at the end of July. All mobile phone users must supply their identity documents as well as proof or residence before they can receive a new mobile number.
