After recently detailing the most popular and the fastest rising search terms that South Africans typed into the Google website search box during 2012, tech giant Google now reveals the most-watched South African YouTube videos of 2012.

Trending during 2012 was music and comedy with the likes of Die Antwoord’s popular “I Fink you Freeky” hit and MduComics’ “Jesus is Shangaan” animated skit managing to snag the most views. This marks the second year running that Die Antwoord and MduComics have made a Top 10 appearance, despite 2011 being dominated by the mountain biker who got taken out by Buck Norris.

Trevor Noah, one of SA’s most popular comedians also features this year showing that South Africans aren’t afraid to laugh at themselves or their politicians.

The most YouTube watched videos for 2012 are:

3. Sunday - The Soil
4. Crazy Normal - President Jacob Zuma's Speech -Trevor Noah
5. RDP house in Limpopo 1 - MduComics TV

9. Opening Medley - Joyous Celebration

Google-owned YouTube also announced the global Top 10 YouTube videos and they are:

  • 4 billion hours of video watched/month.
  • 72 hrs of video uploaded every minute.
  • If YouTube’s Top 5 YouTube channels were stacked against US cable channels, they would be in the Top 20 in terms of viewers.
  • 1 out of 4 YouTube views in the world come from mobile devices.
  • A billion mobile views per day.
  • A trillion views during 2011.
  • 800 million unique users visit YouTube each month.
  • YouTube’s video content partners have more than doubled their revenue for the fourth year in a row.
  • Thousands of partners are now making six figures.
