TweetDeck has announced that it has been acquired by popular micro-blogging site Twitter. This third party application, powered by Adobe AIR, is used by millions of users around the globe to get easier access to some of their social networking sites simultaneously, the likes of Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Foursquare and MySpace.

“We’ve grown from one team member and a single user, to a team of fifteen and a user-base of millions. The reason for this growth is simple - our unwavering focus on providing high-quality tools and services for the Twitter-centric power-user,” a blogpost by TweetDeck founder and CEO Iain Dodsworth read.

“This has always been our core audience - the most active, influential and valuable users of Twitter and social media in general. Quality over quantity.”

According to Dodsworth it is for that reason that Twitter has acquired TweetDeck. He stated that the mainstream users of Twitter, along with the mobile users (via the various mobile clients) are already well catered for by twitter.com.

By becoming part of the official Twitter platform, TweetDeck will now cater to the needs of “brands, influencers, the highly active” and power users. The company may have become part of Twitter, but it will still be based in London with the same team responsible for product development.

Although no official figures have been released so far regarding the price Twitter paid for TweetDeck, speculation places it in the tens of millions of dollars.
