Popular micro-blogging site Twitter has launched the “Follow” Button, which will function in a similar way to social networking behemoth, Facebook’s “Like” button.

According to the company, there are quite a few benefits for publishers and companies that add the “Follow” Button to their site. These includes the fact that it gives Twitter users easy and direct access to their official Twitter pages.

Users who follow a business brand, celebrity, or star athlete account, are much more likely to retweet their status updates, engage with their tweets and repeatedly visit their websites.

“More than 50 sites have added the Follow Button today [31 May 2011], making it easy for you to discover the Twitter accounts of your favorite reporters, athletes, celebrities, and other personalities,” a Twitter blogpost read.

The company launched the “Follow” Button with its partners such as Jennifer Lopez, CNet.com, Justin Bieber, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, CNNMoney, as well as the Internet Movie Database (IMDb).

Users can now follow Twitter accounts directly from other sites, but they’ll also be able to view the profile and latest tweets of that account, by clicking on the username next to the “Follow” Button.

In order to add a “Follow” Button to your website, follow the directions on Twitter’s website. Twitter also recently acquired third party application TweetDeck.
