The forthcoming edition of Microsoft’s PC and tablet operating system (OS), Windows 8, may be snatching all of the headlines, but that doesn’t mean that the Redmond-based software giant has locked away its Windows 7 PR trumpet.  

During a keynote address at Computex Taipei, currently underway in Taiwan, Microsoft’s corporate VP of the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) division, Steven Guggenheimer, revealed that the company has sold over 600 million Windows 7 licenses.

This is up from 400 million, which the firm crossed back in July 2011 and 525 million surpassed at the end of January 2012. The latter means that Microsoft has sold more than 75 million Windows 7 licences in the last four months alone.

Guggenheimer stated that 2012 is going to be a very busy year in terms of launches for the company. “In addition to updating Windows client, Windows Server, phone and embedded platforms, there’s a massive wave of software and services coming to market that we think will delight customers, from Windows Azure, to Office 15, Xbox games, Skype and Bing.”

In related news, Microsoft recently announced that South African customers who buy a new Windows 7-operating PC before February 2013, will not have to fork out full price to upgrade to the upcoming Windows 8. Via the Windows Upgrade Offer qualifying buyers will have the option to purchase a downloadable upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for around R125 (final price will be the equivalent of $14.99).
