Microsoft has announced that Xbox LIVE members across the globe have succeeded in their attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest simultaneous online 100 m sprint.

For this record attempt, the Redmond-based company managed to pull in the support of 10 539 participants. That being the number of gamers that took part in the challenge on Xbox LIVE, during the Xbox Nations Free LIVE Weekend on 23 April 2011.

The attempt took place at 19:00 South Africa time on Saturday 23rd April as part of Xbox Nations, a challenge inviting Xbox LIVE members to ‘Play for their Nation’ in order to assist in creating history with Xbox LIVE and Kinect Sports.

“Congratulations to the crew from Xbox LIVE and most importantly, the thousands of Xbox LIVE members from across the globe who got up off their sofas to create this new Guinness World Record for the largest ever online sprint,” stated Gaz Deaves, editor of Guinness World Records Gamer’s Edition 2011. “The new record will be considered for inclusion in the next Gamer’s Edition.”

“We’re thrilled to hold a Guinness World Record title for the largest online 100 metre sprint! Breaking a Guinness World Record is such a massive milestone and we’re pleased that we had the chance to do this in partnership with the Xbox LIVE community, following our record breaking launch of Kinect,” added Yvette van Rooyen, Xbox product and marketing manager for South Africa.

Microsoft also recently launched the Kinect Sports: Calorie Challenge game add-on for Kinect Sports, which is the first full-body, controller-free sports game enabling players to physically compete with their friends over Xbox LIVE.
