The world’s most popular video sharing site YouTube, is celebrating its sixth birthday this month. YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen launched YouTube.com in May 2005 and went on to sell the site to Google 18 months later for $1.76 billion.

To celebrate its birthday the Google-owned company revealed some stats, illustrating its global dominance in the online video sharing sphere.

Currently over 48 hours (two days worth) of videos are uploaded to the site every minute, which is a 37% increase over the last six months and 100% growth compared to last year.

The number of views worldwide that YouTube’s videos achieve, number more than three billion per day, a 50% year-on-year increase. The company stated that this is equal to nearly half the world’s population watching a YouTube video each day, or every US citizen viewing at least nine videos a day.

“You’ve made YouTube successful because it’s a reflection of you and your world. If this is what we’ve accomplished together in six years, we can only imagine where you’ll take us in the next six!” a YouTube blogpost read.

Hurley and Chen announced this month that they have acquired Tap11.com, a real-time business intelligence platform for Facebook and Twitter. Tap11.com will now form part of their new internet company AVOS.
