It has been confirmed that pre-orders for Apple’s iPhone 4 have exceeded 200 000 in China after the handset was made available in the country on Saturday.

According to Reuters, local service provider China Unicom revealed that it had ceased taking pre-orders due to excessive demand and that 60 000 customers had already received handsets. To put these new numbers into context, it took roughly six weeks to sell 100 000 iPhone 3Gs handsets upon its release in China in 2009.

The overall popularity of the iPhone 4 globally has been unprecedented. Although service providers, retailers and the technology media community expected it to be one of Apple’s most popular products ever, sales figures have been virtually astronomical since it was released three months ago.

The device was also released locally last week, prompting a number of iPhone fans to wait until midnight on the 21st to get their hands on a device. Thus far, Vodacom has indicated that stock levels are looking precariously low.

In our own experience we at TechSmart witnessed close to forty iPhone 4 handsets fly off the shelf at the iStore in Sandton in a matter of three hours this weekend.

MTN, who has also released the iPhone 4 locally, has not commented on current local stock levels.
