A couple of weeks ago, Ben Affleck had to quell fan concerns about when the standalone Batman film was indeed being made, and whether the Oscar-winning director would be helming the project both in front and behind the camera. Now, in an official statement to Variety, Affleck has confirmed that he will step down as director for the standalone Batman film.

"There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions. Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world," said Affleck.

At this stage, the producers of the film (which includes Affleck) have not detailed how the search for a new director will impact the film's 2018 release, but it will likely be pushed to accommodate the change.
