HTC has been teasing a standalone version of its Vive VR headset for some time, but now the company has officially lifted the lid on the offering. It carries one caveat, however, with it only available in China at the moment.

With the VR market in China growing in prominence, according to HTC, the company is likely hoping for its new offering to be the go-to device in the region. Unfortunately though, there is no mention of when other regions across the globe will be able to get their hands on the Vive Standalone at this stage.

As such, the forthcoming standalone Daydream headset that HTC is working on, may be your best bet for an untethered VR experience.

Shifting back to the Vive Standalone, it has been developed in conjunction with Qualcomm, with a Snapdragon 835 CPU powering things. While the mobile-based chip affords lower costs compared to PC versions, it does mean that users will not get the same visual quality that the standard Vive VR delivers.
