Huawei’s latest upper midmarket smartphone offering, the Ascend P6 (review) may have won us over, however, the big question is whether the company can follow through on its tablets.

Now, it looks like local users are about to get the chance to find out, as Huawei confirmed that its 10” Android 4.1-based tablet, the MediaPad 10 Link, is now available on South African shores.

The specs of the device, at least for a budget level R3 000 - R4 000 offering, seem to be promising, with it sporting a K3v2 Cortex-A9 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 1 GB of memory, and 1280 x 800 IPS screen. Build wise, users can look forward to an 9.9 mm thick aluminium-alloy body (thankfully not the cheap feeling plastic that manages to besmirch even high end devices) while weighing in at 640 g.

Perhaps most importantly, the company has promised that the tablet’s 6600 mAh battery will provides more than 10 hours of continuous usage. While the MediaPad 10 Link will be available in two versions, 8 GB and 16 GB versions, both of these will sport Wi-Fi and 3G

Another feature worth mentioning is the tablet’s dual speakers – handy for those who tend to use their tablet for watching movies or playing games, in other words, the vast majority of users  - and Digital Dolby Plus surround sound technology.

To the point

"Most consumers use tablets for entertainment purposes such as gaming, viewing multimedia content, browsing the internet and reading e-books,” commented Larking Huang, Country Director, Huawei Device South Africa.

“We have created the Huawei MediaPad 10 Link to be extraordinary – to excel in all of the entertainment capabilities including speed, power, web-browsing, high definition display and audio, and packaging it all in a sleek and compact body," he added. The tablet is currently available from Cell C and Telkom Mobile.
