Is Jay Z’s Tidal music service about to be snatched up by Apple? After the pomp and ceremony that surrounded the announcement of the service (along with co-owners Beyoncé, Madonna and Chris Martin), it hit some rocky patches along the way but also secured the streaming rights of new albums by artists such as Kanye West and Rihanna.

If the Wall Street Journal is to be believed, talks between the two companies are ongoing, with Cupertino looking to purchase Tidal to strengthen its Apple Music service, which has also come under critique recently. Another drawcard is Tidal’s strong relations with big artists such as Kanye and Madonna, with the service offering high-definition audio as well as HD music videos (Kanye’s controversial Famous music video, featuring a number of naked celebs, debuted there last month). At this stage Tidal executives are denying any negotiations.

Tidal was purchased for $56 million in March 2015 by Jay Z, with a number of artists having a stake in the company. According to the streaming service, it has 4.2 million paying subscribers, with a catalogue that includes more than 40 million songs.
