LG’s Display division has announced that it has developed the world’s first quad HD (2560 x 1440) AH-IPS LCD panel for smartphones, with an eye-catching pixel density of 538 ppi.

According to the Korean tech company the quad HD panel delivers clearer images with four times more pixels than a 1280 x 720 HD display. In addition it provides enhanced colour reproduction as well as improved contrast and vividness when compared to current mobile touchscreens. LG stated that this new screen will allow smartphone users to view more lifelike and crisp photos, and even Blu-ray equivalent videos on their devices.

Beyond the eyecandy of the resolution and pixel density, LG said that the quad HD display is also the world’s slimmest at just 1.21 mm thin and narrowest panel, thanks to a 1.2 mm bezel measured in LCD modules. The company added that the thickness of the display has been reduced by 12% when compared to the 5.2" full HD panel that it released as recently as last month.

As a result of the panel being based upon Low Temperature Poly-Silicon (LTPS) substrate, it is able to produce a very high amount of brightness measured at 430 nit. According to market research firm DisplaySearch, 765 million LTPS-based smartphone displays are expected to ship globally next year, as mobile devices with larger screens and higher resolutions that are more energy efficient become more important selling factors for premium smartphones.

“LG Display, which pioneered the high resolution mobile market with [the] introduction of the world’s first full HD smartphone panel in 2012, again opens new possibilities with the successful application of QHD technology,” said Dr. Byeong-koo Kim, VP and head of LG Display’s IT and Mobile Development Group. “With this breakthrough, LG Display will continue to raise new standards for mobile resolution and lead the mobile display market.”

In related news, LG recently lifted the lid on its new flagship smartphone, dubbed the G2, which boasts a tantalising 5.2" Edge-to-Edge IPS (1080 x 1920 pixels; 423 ppi) display with a reduced bezel size of just 2.65 mm on each side edge.
