Ratchet and Clank may be best known for their outings on the PS2 and PS3, but the titular duo are six short months away from their biggest challenge yet – capturing the attention and charming moviegoers. What’s apparent from the newest trailer is that you don’t have to have played the games to follow the movie, as it introduces you to the mechanically minded and trouble magnet Ratchet (a creature called a Lombax) and Clank (his small robotic companion), who matches Ratchet’s penchant for smashing and breaking things with using his brains.

The story is pretty much what we would expect from a Ratchet and Clark storytelling perspective, with a vile megalomaniac alien named Chairman Drek channeling his inner Darth Vader. Whereas the Sith Lord only wiped Leia’s planet from existence, Drek has his sights set on destroying every planet in the Solana Galaxy with a world destroying weapon (no, it’s not called a Death Star).

Of course, Ratchet and Clank end up teaming up with the Galactic Rangers to stop the mad plans for multiple mass extinction events.

More importantly though, for players and non-players alike, the movie (if the trailer is any indication) will be bringing Insomniac’s trademark sense of humour which made the games so endearing.

Also promised is an eclectic cast of characters. Thankfully, video game voice actors James Arnold Taylor (Ratchet), David Kaye (Clank), Armin Shimerman (Nefarious), and Jim Ward (Captain Qwark) will be reprising their roles for the movie, it really wouldn’t be the same without them.

They are being joined by a solid looking cast as well, with Paul Giamatti doing the honours as the vile Chairman Drek, and John Goodman, Rosario Dawson, Bella Thorne and  Sylvester Stallone also along for the ride. The movie is set to debut in April next year, alongside a new Ratchet and Clank game, and the first time the duo make the jump to the PS4.
