Chinese smartphone manufacturer OPPO has introduced its latest mid-range device, the Reno16 F 5G locally for just under R17 000. The new model has a strong focus on camera hardware and battery capacity, while the 3D Pop Planet Design might also turn a few heads.
To start, the Reno16 F 5G features a multi-lens camera system configured for varied photographic conditions. The main camera features a 50 MP sensor designed for high-detail captures; the telephoto portrait also comes with a 50 MP sensor with 3.5x optical zoom capabilities; and the ultra-wide camera rounds off the back system with an 8 MP lens offering a 100° field of view. On the front is a 50 MP ultra-wide camera, ideal for group selfies.
The device includes on-board software features such as AI Remix Collage, Popout 2.0, POP Cam, and AI Portrait Glow. For video recording, the device supports 4K Auto Straighten, Zoom Free Video, Dual-View Video 2.0, and 4K front ultra-wide video.
As far as the hardware is concerned, the Reno16 F is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300-Energy 5G platform (also seen in the Reno12 and Reno12 Pro), equipped with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage.
OPPO notes a 6-Year Fluency Certification for long-term performance stability, while the phone runs on ColorOS 16, built on Android 16 (most probably, not confirmed).

As far as the screen is concerned, the Reno16 F features a 6.57-inch FHD+ (2372×1080) AMOLED display with a 120 Hz Smart Adaptive refresh rate, splash resistance, and glove-touch functionality. For durability, the handset carries an IP69K water and dust resistance rating, which means it won’t mind taking a dive with you in the pool.
Another highlight is the 7000 mAh silicon-anode battery, which supports 80 W wired charging via OPPO's SUPERVOOC protocol. According to the manufacturer, the charger can restore the battery to 50% in approximately 30 minutes, with a full charge taking just a bit more at 62 minutes.
Finally, OPPO’s Reno range usually includes eye-catching design, with the Reno16 F 5G being no different. It is especially the Pop White, which makes use of a 3D embedded planetary design to pop through the flat surface. While it might not be for everyone, a more subdued Twilight Violet, featuring a dual-texture matte and gloss finish is also available.
The OPPO Reno16 F 5G is available through major South African telecommunications operators, including Vodacom, Telkom, MTN, and Cell C, as well as online retailer Takealot. You will need to pay R16 999 once-off, or R599 per month over 36 months.
If you are deciding on your choice, there is a launch promotion that might help to sway you. Promotions include a bundle valued at R5 999, comprising a 6-month OPPO Care Screen Repair Service Warranty, a SUPERVOOC charger, a screen protector, a phone case, and a choice between an OPPO Bubble remote display accessory or a realme Watch 5 smartwatch, redeemable via the OPPO Rewards platform.
