The fact that Samsung has manufactured a new look Gear smartwatch may be old news, especially as the South Korean manufacturer released images of models sporting the wearable the same day they revealed the Galaxy Note 5 and Galaxy S6 edge+. That said, many were expecting Samsung to unveil the Gear S2 in all its glory come their presentation at IFA 2015 on 3 September. But, like many of its competitors, Samsung has shown off its latest offering prior to the Berlin-hosted event.

Full Circle

Let's get to it then. The Gear S2 features an all-new form factor from Samsung. Gone are the straight lines and large displays of the Galaxy Gear (review) and Gear S. Instead, these are replaced by 1.2" circular watch face for the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic. That said, neither smartwatch bears the Galaxy moniker, so square and rectangle displays could very well return.

Back to the display, which utilises Samsung's own Amoled display technology, and produces a resolution of 360x360 and 302 ppi pixel density. Added to this, is a move away from Android Wear to a Tizen Wearable Platform, although Samsung does not detail which version or indeed its functionality. In terms of RAM and storage, both models feature 512 MB and 4 GB respectively. Furthermore, an IP68-rated waterproofness and dust resistance has been allocated to the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic as well.

Colour Options

This begs the question, what's the difference between the two? Well, the Gear S2 will feature a silver watch face case, and white strap, whereas the Classic will be available in a black watch face case and leather band.

As has become smartwatch norm by now, the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic will allow wearers to bring up text message, email and phone call notifications to their wrist, as well as action replies straight from the watch face. Other features include Samsung's S Health application, as well as Nike+ Running for the fitness-focused angle. Samsung has also included voice memo functionality, as well as a power saving mode. Sticking with the battery, it's a 250 mAh unit, with wireless charging thrown in when the Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic max out their listed 2-3 day battery life. There is no word yet about local release date or price.
