Xiaomi has unveiled its new REDMI Note 17 series in South Africa, a strong midrange smartphone range that looks set to add even more competition in a crowded market.

The latest generation consists of three new models, spearheaded by the company's first-ever Pro Max variant - the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G.

Designed around a philosophy of reliability and everyday resilience the new lineup focuses heavily on massive battery capacity, robust physical durability and extended software support.

Battery that lasts and lasts

To start, a dwindling smartphone battery will be less of a worry on the new REDMIN series, since the entire series adopts large silicon-carbon batteries.

In fact, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G houses Xiaomi's largest-ever smartphone battery at 10 000 mAh, promising up to three days of use on a single charge. It also features a six-year like-new software experience and up to six years of battery health.

Next in line is the REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G with an 8 340 mAh battery equipped with 67W HyperCharge capabilities. Finally, the REDMI Note 17 5G is no slouch either, with a 7700 mAh battery supporting 45W turbo charging.

Supported by smart battery management, the batteries across the lineup retain 80% or more of their original capacity after 1600 charge cycles equating to roughly six years of typical use. Additionally, the entire range will receive up to six years of security updates.

Specs galore

The Pro models sport 6.83” displays, delivering up to 3500 nits of peak brightness alongside 1.5K resolution (2772 × 1280), according to Xiaomi. The standard REDMI Note 17 5G offers an even larger 6.99” screen suited for media streaming and gaming, but at a slightly lower resolution (2396 × 1080). Wet Touch Technology 2.0 ensures responsive screen interaction even when handling water oil or sweat.

Under the hood the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G runs on the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 mobile platform supporting multitasking and advanced photography, with 8 GB of RAM. It includes Xiaomi HyperAI for productivity assistance while Google Gemini and Circle to Search are integrated across all models in the series. The REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G features the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 platform, with the Note 17 5G running the Snapdragon 4 Gen 4 version, with 6 GB of RAM just like the Pro 5G.

As far as look is concerned, a refreshed design language brings a cleaner aesthetic, featuring a flat display gently rounded corners and a dual-finish back panel. Exclusive finishes include a photochromic Cloud Blush variant on the Pro Max that shifts from white to pink-orange under UV light, alongside Satin Orange and Sky Blue options for the Pro model.

REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G

As far as durability is concerned, the REDMI Note 17 Pro Max 5G and REDMI Note 17 Pro 5G are the first devices in the industry to earn TÜV SÜD 5-star Titan Quality Certification. This standard evaluates drop resistance extended water endurance and high-cycle battery performance under rigorous real-world and laboratory testing.

Both Pro models feature advanced waterproof architectures carrying IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings. They have also passed a demanding 2-meter 72-hour water-resistance test and introduce a new Underwater Mode. Furthermore SGS-certified drop resistance allows the handsets to withstand falls from up to three meters onto granite surfaces reinforced by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and a high-strength internal frame.

The big question is, of course, what’s the price of these in South Africa? Available in stores already, local pricing and contract configurations on the REDMI Note 17 range include:
