Firm to join Facebook team for undisclosed amount
Publish date: 19 June 2012 by Hanleigh DanielsFollowing its $1 billion acquisition of photo-sharing app Instagram earlier this year, Facebook’s latest acquisition is facial recognition firm Face.com.
The social networking behemoth has agreed to purchase the entire Face.com team and the company’s technology for an undisclosed amount.
Face.com is a technology company based in Tel Aviv, Israel, that develops a face recognition platform that is used by many developers and firms, including Facebook.
The company’s platform supports web as well as mobile services, and enables Facebook users to tag and identify their friends and family within photos on the site. Its KLIK application is a camera app that employs face recognition technology to enable users to easily tag their Facebook friends in real-time.
“We love building products, and like our friends at Facebook, we think that mobile is a critical part of people’s lives as they both create and consume content, and share content with their social graph,” Face.com CEO Gil Hirsch stated in a blogpost.
“By working with Facebook directly, and joining their team, we’ll have more opportunities to build amazing products that will be employed by consumers – that’s all we’ve ever wanted to do,” Hirsch concluded.
In related news, Google, Facebook, and Twitter recently revealed that they are joining forces within the Interactive Advertising Bureau in an attempt to take on one of the most prevalent scourges on the web, namely malware or scams.
