LG is continuing its pre-MWC (2012 Mobile World Congress) smartphone announcement marathon, with the unveiling of the Tegra 3-powered Optimus 4X HD smartphone.

The 8.9 mm thin Optimus 4X HD is the Korean company’s first quad-core-sporting smartphone, powered by Nvidia’s 1.5 GHz Tegra 3 application processor. This mobile CPU is the world’s only 4-plus-1 quad-core processor, which utilises four performance cores as well as its 12-core graphics processing unit (GPU) for demanding tasks like gaming, and a fifth battery-saver core for less demanding tasks including active standby or music playback.

The smartphone features a 4.7" (720 x 1280) True HD IPS display, 8 MP BSI (backside illumination) rear-facing camera and 1.3 MP front-facing snapper for video calls and capturing self-portraits. It operates on the latest version (4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich) of Google’s Android mobile operating system and further sports 16 GB of internal storage space, 1 GB DDR2 RAM and a large 2150 mAh battery.

“LG introduced the world’s first dual-core smartphone exactly one year ago and today we’re announcing the next milestone,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, president and CEO of LG mobile communications company. “But speed in itself isn’t what makes LG Optimus 4X HD unique, it’s the benefit we’re bringing to customers with the HD multimedia experience in a mobile form factor.”

LG stated that the Optimus 4X HD will be on display at the LG Stand (Hall 8) during 2012 MWC, which is taking place from 27 February to the 1st of March in Barcelona, Spain. No pricing or release info is available yet.
