Mozilla has announced the release of the latest edition of its popular Firefox web browser. Firefox 18 is now available for download and incorporates a new JavaScript compiler dubbed IonMonkey, which the company says makes web-based apps as well as games perform up to 25% quicker.

iMac and Macbook users will appreciate the fact that Firefox now supports Apple’s high-resolution Retina Display, enabling an enhanced web browsing experience that features sharper looking movies, online games and webpages.

Windows, Mac OS and Linux users new to Firefox can download the browser (approximately 19.4 MB - Windows PC version), whilst Firefox users can click on the ‘About Firefox’ section under ‘Help’ within their browser to upgrade (around 12 MB for Windows PC) to the latest version.

On the mobile side with Firefox for Android

Firefox for Android now offers search suggestions which will be offered as a user starts typing into the Awesome Bar.

Another new feature is additional phishing and malware support. This protects users from malicious websites, with Firefox for Android warning when it encounters webpages that may be used to deliver malware or phishing content.

The mobile browser is available for download from Google Play for free.

In related news, the latest mobile browser stats from market analytics firm Net Applications, has revealed that Apple’s Safari mobile browser dominates the mobile browser arena, snapping up a whopping 61.85% of the market share.
