One of the Sony Ericsson (SE) phones in its GreenHeart range, the Elm, has been named the most sustainable handset on the market on O2’s Eco rating list, which is the UK’s first sustainable rating system for mobile phones.

The Elm received a score of 4.3 out of 5 for its green credentials, which includes its environmental impact, how it assists users in making more eco-friendly choices, as well as SE’s ethical performance as a phone manufacturer.

The ranking list contains 65 mobile phones from six manufacturers (Sony Ericsson, Nokia, HTC, LG, Samsung and Palm) and SE is well represented with five of the top 10 mobile phones coming from the company’s stable.

“Sony Ericsson is committed to delivering products with the best possible environmental performance in the industry,” said Mats Pellbäck Scharp, head of Corporate Sustainability at SE.

“That’s why we’re pleased the Sony Ericsson Elm phone has been rated the most sustainable mobile phone in the industry. We fully support the new O2 Eco rating system - through initiatives such as this, consumers have the information they need to make informed green choices.”

SE’s Elm measures just 110 x 45 x 14 mm and sports a 5 megapixel camera, aGPS, HSDPA, all in an eco-friendly package constructed from recycled plastics, utilising electronic phone manuals and a low power consumption charger.
