After occupying the global desktop browser throne for an entire month during May, Google’s Chrome web browser has gone on to extend its lead over Microsoft’s Internet Explorer (IE) and Mozilla’s Firefox.

According to the latest figures from StatCounter, Chrome upped its stake of the worldwide desktop browser market from 32.76% in June to 33.81% for July, with IE close on its heels at 32.04% (down from 32.31%). Completing the top 3 is Firefox and its 23.73% share, a slight decrease from June’s 24.56%.

On the fringes, we find Apple’s Safari browser with its 7.12% stake and Opera Software’s Opera browser, which has remained relatively stagnant at 1.72%.

The regional browser picture

Website monitoring firm Pingdom recently took a closer look at how popular Firefox is around the world, finding that the fox still maintains a dominant position in 14 countries, eight of which are African states. StatCounter confirmed the popularity of Firefox on the continent, revealing that Firefox leads the desktop browser charge in Africa as it is used by 40.71% of the web-surfing populus. It is followed by Chrome with 31.83% and IE with its 21.2%.

Far behind the top 3 is the Opera browser with its 2.8% stake as well as Safari and its 2.42% share of the African desktop browser market.

In related news, Google recently launched its newest search feature, Handwrite, which is in beta form. Handwrite is already accessible on both Android and iOS devices, enabling users to write the word or sentence they are searching for using their natural handwriting on Google’s homepage.
