Best Windows Mobile Yet

HTC’s HD2 is definitely a conversation starter. Pop this thing out and there’s an immediate buzz about its 4.3” screen. It’s massive. In fact it’s the largest commercially available smartphone screen out there. Put this next to an iPhone and the Apple looks puny (granted the 3GS still has a better resolution). The best thing about it is that it’s not let down by a horrible resistive touch experience. The HD2 is the first Windows Mobile, or WinMo as they now prefer to call version 6.5, to have a more sensitive capacitive touch-screen.

HTC’s Sense

In fact there is very little that does let this phone down. It feels good, looks great and HTC’s Sense user interface does a superb job of masking the notoriously difficult and boring Windows back-end. We’re used to HTC’s Sense since it usually features on their popular Android devices. It enables you to populate your home screen your quick links, whether it be an important program like Google Maps, a contact, or internet bookmarks. Furthermore, by scrolling left or right you have your home screen tabs that include amongst others, your email, calendar, important contacts and photos and videos. All this is handled very smoothly by Qualcomm’s 1 GHz Snapdragon chipset. In fact everything runs blazingly fast on the Snapdragon.

Tabbed browsing

Connectivity wise you can’t ask for more since the HD2 features GPS, HSDPA and Wi-Fi.  With a 4.3” screen to browse on, surfing the web is of course great. Less so on Internet Explorer, but luckily the tab-enabled Opera Mobile browser is pre-installed. All you need to do to zoom into text is pinch and expand. Twitter was well integrated, but HTC could have shown more love for Facebook, which is stuck on the Windows menu.

Tether modem and Wi-Fi router

Using a BlackBerry or the iPhone as a tether modem to connect to the net is usually a complicated affair. Not so with the HD2, since we simply had to connect it to a PC, select the Tethered modem option on its screen and off we went. No mess no fuss- the simplest modem experience we’ve had ever. That said, much to our amazement one can connect to the HD2 wirelessly, like the MiFi, since it can be used as a Wi-Fi Router to share internet connectivity. Although both options didn’t work as consistently as we would have liked. As far as email is concerned we still prefer BlackBerry since setting up Gmail was a breeze but our regular Outlook mail was a headache.

Microsoft should thank heaven for HTC and their Sense interface. A very solid piece of hardware, and the best screen in the business, the HD2 is not only the best WinMo device out there, but also one of the top phones currently available.

Well, i find it difficult to believe that it's the "Best Windows Mobile device available", my phone was slow glitchy and overall annoying.

I enjoyed the large screen but the touch screen was hard to type out text messages or even navigate my phone book!

i expected better from HTC being a huge fan of my old HTC 4350.

Cant agree with you more....Ive had an HTC HD2 now for approximately 7 months, hate it with a passion. Must regularly take out the battery to reset it as it freezes without any explanation. It is extremely slow and at times it dials after Ive put the phone back into my pocket being frustrated with the slow speed of dialling process, the touch screen urge me to sometimes tap the button required continiouslyt as it does not respond.....is it the software, is it my head? the only thing i like about it is the internet spead when i use it on my laptop as a modem. thats about all. it looks very impressive to your friends as long as you dont use it in front of them......

If you "hate" the HTC HD2, then your are most likely incapable of using it. I have had my HD2 for 4 months now and have NEVER had it crash or being slow. It has a 1GHz processor, how can it possibly be slow? It seems to me that this is finger trouble and not the phone. The possibilities are endless with this phone, it has a lot of custom OS ports. I currently run my HD2 with a dual boot between Windows 6.5 and Android 2.2.1, and both are running silky smooth. The HTC HD2 is a master piece!

Why are there no phone shops in SA, or maybe I have not traveled properly going from from mall to mall. The idea of network providers been the only shops to sell mobile phones is out of order, anyone knows any phone shop please drop a line.

I was disappointed with your review and everybody else who reviewed the HTC HD2. Yes it does have the wow factor when its in your face. But I find the Firmware to be sloppy and crushes all the time. It cannot multitask before crushing four times or more per day.

The multimedia player sucks. Load an 8gb MiniSD card to it, it will not play a song without spending 5 minutes to 'buffer' the song and then takes 5 more minutes again to go skip a track.

It does not allow you to exit most of the programs, it only send them to a background that drains the battery fairly quickly and slow or even crush the phone.

I bought the phone about 2 weeks ago and I'm already regretting. My Nokia N95, and the ‘crappy’ Blackberry Storm (which I had just replaced) outplay the HD2 when it comes to stability, reliability and performance. Sure it does have the wow factor, but the firmware is crappy and does not do any justice to the Device’s hardware
