Good news and bad news for Hellboy fans. Let’s start with the positive - there’s a new Hellboy movie on the way. The negative? Well, it’s not the final film in Guillermo Del Toro’s trilogy, nor will it feature the man that was born to play the boy from hell - Ron Perlman.

Ok, so that is quite a bit to process emotionally, but let’s work through this. Mike Mignola posted on his Facebook page that an R-rated (2-18) Hellboy reboot has been confirmed, with Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game Of Thrones) sitting in the director’s chair. Furthermore, tied to the protagonist is David Harbour who we’ve grown to love in Stranger Things. The working title so far is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, and not Hellboy III: Dark Worlds as many may have hoped.

The Hollywood Reporter (THR) notes that Millennium Films is in negotiations with producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin, who control the movie rights, while Mike Richardson of Dark Horse Entertainment is also involved. Here’s an interesting little tidbit from THR: Apparently, Del Toro was having discussions about Chapter Three with Levin, Gordon, and Dark Horse last year, but Del Toro’s demand for a bigger budget became a problem. In the end, the producers decided on a reboot.

There’s has been no reaction from Del Toro’s Twitter account, while Perlman has also been quiet, although we believe he must be far too busy getting his 2020 presidential campaign on track.

One of the writers on the new movie, Andrew Cosby (alongside Mignola and Christopher Golden) spoke to Silver Screen Beat and said that director Levin wanted to, “walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie,” and that the script is actually done, although they will continue to work on it going forward.

We can’t say that we’re not a bit disappointed to get to see that final Del Toro instalment, but anyways, hell yeah for the Hellboy reboot. Now for that new Spawn movie we’ve been dreaming about...
