Neil Gaiman is a man of many talents, but in many ways it was his awesome The Sandman comic that kicked things into high gear. Telling the tale of the mythical Lord of Dreams, Morpheus, we find him stuck in captivity, with his domain in decline. The series takes readers on a journey through a vast labyrinth of dreams, worlds and characters, and now DC Entertainment has announced  that The Sandman Universe will see the light of day, with comics appearing from its Vertigo imprint. Dreams and magic will continue to play a role, with this new line being “curated” by Gaiman.

It all starts off with The Sandman Universe #1 on 8 August, a special of sorts that reintroduces Morpheus and the Sandman universe to those perhaps unfamiliar with the 1989 comic. From there four series will expand the line-up:

  • The Dreaming by Si Spurrier (2000AD, SUICIDE SQUAD)
  • House of Whispers by Nalo Hopkinson (Brown Girl in the Ring, Midnight Robber, New Moon’s Arms)
  • Lucifer by Dan Watters (Limbo, Assassin’s Creed comic series)
  • Books of Magic by Kat Howard (Roses and Rot, An Unkindness of Magicians)

The Dreaming and House of Whispers are set for September, while Lucifer and Books of Magic kicks off in October.

Gaiman notes, “The Sandman Universe has always been very close and personal to me and I am thrilled to open up the world once again to an extremely talented group of writers and artists. I get to see the joy in these brilliant people whom I’ve selected, as they get their chance to play in this world.”

Unfortunately, our dream of seeing Sam Keith working on some of the titles will not be realised. Keith is of course the artist responsible for the awesomely disturbing images of the first The Sandman books.
