After debuting a new trailer to amp anticipation for MGSV: The Phantom Pain, Konami did not stop there, presenting 30 minutes of gameplay footage at Gamescom. It details some of the specifics that Konami integrated into the design of Snake Mother's new homebase, a retrofitted oil rig. In particular, we also got to see how gamers can manage the Diamond Dogs, in order to create new weapons for Snake. Added to that, Konami also gave a glimpse into the game's MMO mode - the FOB system.

Enter the Snake

The first thing to come to grips with is the Mother Base, not only is it your base of operations within the game, but it also requires maintenance, development and improvement, so Snake can receive better support from his Diamond Dogs while in the field. This help comes not only in the form of a shiny new weapon, but also supply drops and military intel.

One unique aspect is the selection of specific recruits for the Diamond Dogs army, as such, it serves as a quasi-fantasy football league, where gamers can create a team customised to their needs and playing style.

Base of Operation

The FOB (Forward Operating Base) forms part of the online aspect of MGSV TTP, and as such allows them to strategically place bases across the globe (in-game) in order to increase the Diamond Dogs' conflict management capacity.

Being an online aspect of the game, those playing MGSV TTP can attack one another's FOBs. When that happens, gamers can put together tactical teams, all of which have members with odd codenames like Gray Bull and Jumping Panther. Each tactical team member has a specialist skill, so it's important to choose wisely given your required tactics.

Unlike previous Metal Gear Solid games, it appears as if there will be far more to enjoy in The Phantom Pain once the traditional story mode is completed. The Mother Base elements look quite intriguing and should prove quite enjoyable, if a little difficult to grasp at first, for Real Time Strategy gaming fans.
