At the beginning of the month, reports suggested that Amazon was trying to secure the rights to develop a Lord of the Rings series for its Prime Video platform. Now, Amazon CEO, Jeff Bezos has confirmed that the deal has gone through, taking to Twitter to make the announcement.

Amazon is believed to have secured a multi-season commitment, with the series reportedly said to be a Lord of the Rings prequel. Whether or not that means it will deal with stories placed between the events of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings remains to be seen.

At this stage, no precise airdate has been outlined for the project, nor have any names been attached to its development. What is known though, is that this should be Amazon Prime's most ambitious undertaking to date. That said, given their recent success with The Handmaid's Tale, Transparent and The Grand Tour, they certainly have momentum on their side.

The real question, however, is how fans of J.R.R Tolkien's work, as well as the Peter Jackson directed films, will react to the forthcoming series.
