British manufacturer McLaren has debuted a handful of cars in recent months, something we're not quite used to seeing from this creator of high-end performance machines. With hypercars like the P1 out of reach for most Joe-sixpacks, perhaps the new 570S can provide something slightly more attainable.

The 570S is the first addition to McLaren's Sports offerings, which is essentially their range of highly tuned sports cars, and is a distinct change in tactic from a company that has always designed upper echelon vehicles. That being said, the 570S is certainly nothing to snark at, and features some of McLaren's latest technology to deliver an unrivalled performance.

Power and glory

First, the 570S is supremely light, with a newly designed carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis, as well as aluminium bodywork. The former weighs a staggering 80 kg, with the car's gross weight listed at 1313 kg. Fittingly, the 570S features a powerful engine with McLaren opting for a 3.8 litre twin-turbo V8. As expected, this makes the 570S quite rapid indeed, with 0-100 km/h taken care of in a blistering 3.2 seconds, which will truly make McLaren's new 675 LT worried.

The official top speed is not listed, but we'd venture to guess that it has been electronically restrained to the 280 km/h limit (for South African roads). McLaren has also been eager to talk up its power to weight ratio, said to the class leading according to the manufacturer at 434 PS per tonne. Also listed is 600 Nm of torque, which is more than enough proof that the 570S has the power to get off the line at speed.

So when will you be able to see all this goodness for yourself? Well the local release of the 570S is yet to be dated, but this new sports car is set to make its official debut at the New York International Auto Show in just two days (1 April). Check out the teaser video below, to hear the 570S in action.
