Following Twitter and Google’s Zeitgeist efforts, Facebook has now also released a recap of the most prominent events and happenings of 2012.

The world’s most popular social network, which passed the significant one billion user milestone this year, has put together a series of trend lists for the US, along with a few other countries, unfortunately not including Mzansi.

These lists chronicle, amongst others, the top events, the most popular public figures, as well as the most listened to songs on Facebook during the year. Users can view all of these lists on Facebook’s Stories website.

The most popular events on Facebook during 2012 in the US were:

1. US Presidential Election
2. Superbowl XLVI
3. Death of Whitney Houston
4. Superstorm Sandy
5. London 2012 Olympics
6. Death of Trayvon Martin
7. Facebook IPO
8. Aurora Shootings
9. Death of Dick Clark
10. Obama's Endorsement of Gay Marriage

When it comes to movies, the most popular 2012 trends Stateside were:

1. The Hunger Games
2. The Avengers
3. Magic Mike
4. The Vow
5. Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2
6. 21 Jump Street
7. The Dark Knight Rises (review)
8. Dr. Seuss' The Lorax
9. Skyfall (review)
10. Prometheus (review)

In terms of technology, the most popular 2012 trending topics in the US on Facebook were:

1. Facebook-owned Instagram
2. Timeline
3. Pinterest
4. Draw Something
5. iPhone 5
6. Kindle Fire
7. SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act)
8. News Feed
9. Siri
10. SongPop

In addition, the company also enabled users to access their very own Year in Review via timeline. When you visit Facebook.com/yearinreview, you will be able to view the 20 biggest moments from your own year including life events, highlighted posts as well as the most popular stories from your timeline.

This functionality has resulted in the most personal and nostalgic 2012 Year In Review recap, available on any of the social networks.

In other social networking related news, microblogging site Twitter recently added an email sharing feature for tweets and also made Instagram-like photo filters available to its iOS- and Android-powered mobile device users.
