Microsoft recently breached the significant 100 000 mark in terms of apps that have been added to its Windows Phone Marketplace, and now its most important hardware partner, Nokia, has also reached an app store milestone.  

According to the Finnish cellphone giant, there are now more than 120 000 apps within its Nokia Store, with mobile users downloading more than 15 million application each and every day. North of 120 million mobile phone users have registered to use the Nokia Store, and to date they have downloaded over five billion items across all the mobile platforms that the Nokia Store services.

These includes the MeeGo-powered Nokia N9 smartphone and Nokia Belle-operating devices. Series 40 (S40) mobile phones accounted for around 13% of the first billion downloads, but were responsible for approximately 42% of the last billion app downloads.

Most of the content items housed within the Nokia Store (100 000+) are available for the Espoo-based firm’s S40 range of feature phones, with almost 25 000 of these items designed specifically for the company’s Asha feature phone series.

In related news, Nokia recently made some major structural changes in order to raise income and cut its expenses, which include selling the luxury phone maker Vertu and slashing its workforce by up to 10 000 positions globally by the end of 2013. Espoo’s chief financial officer Timo Ihamuotila also revealed that the Finnish firm is ready to generate additional funds, by selling its intellectual property rights (IPR) for the “right price”.
