Mobile OS update Belle rings for Nokia

Publish date: 22 December 2011 by Hanleigh Daniels

Nokia may have already boarded the Redmond mobile operating system (OS) express with the announcement of its Windows Phone Mango-running duo, the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710, but the Finnish phone maker is still giving attention to its Symbian-operating devices.

After announcing the follow-up to Symbian Anna called Symbian Belle back in August, Nokia has now revealed that it will be dropping the Symbian moniker, renaming the Symbian Belle user interface (UI) update to Nokia Belle. The company stated that this UI upgrade will be available for download soon for certain Symbian-operating smartphones, including the Nokia N8, E7, C7, C6-01, X7 and E6.

Starting in February 2012, Nokia will release the new Nokia Belle software update to users of these devices, giving them access to new functionality, such as six home-screens, free-form resizable live widgets, as well as an Android-like pull down status bar. No info regarding the local availability of this update has been released yet.

Besides the devices that will be updated to Belle, and mobiles that were launched with Belle pre-installed, such as the Nokia 603 and Nokia 701, Nokia will also release “enhanced versions of the Nokia N8, Nokia C7 and Nokia C6-01” that will feature Nokia Belle right out of the box.

According to GSM Arena no other enhancements have been made to these mobiles other than the fact that they’ll be giving users a chance to experience the new mobile OS a little bit early. Espoo simply stated that these enhanced smartphones will be arriving in China first and then make their way to other markets around the world.

In related news, Nokia also recently announced that the global roll out of the software update (v1.1) for its MeeGo-powered smartphone, the Nokia N9, has kicked off.
